Terry Gross’s ‘Fresh Air’ Interview With Maurice Sendak, Illustrated

Back in 2011 NPR’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” aired one of its more fascinating and heartbreaking interviews when Gross talked to the beloved Maurice Sendak by phone. Sendak, who would pass just months later, lamented about the tragedies of aging — specifically watching friend after friend die before him — along with the beauties of it. Finally, Sendak offered one piece of simple advice: “Live your life, live your life, live your life.”

Illustrator Christoph Niemann was driving in his car when he heard the interview, and it so moved him that he was inspired to illustrate the first five minutes of it. The end result is simply beautiful. Enjoy.
