The iPod Shuffle – Tupac’s “Dear Mama”

Eighteen years ago this week, Tupac Shakur sat inside a maximum security correctional facility while his third solo album, Me Against The World, hit shelves. The project represented a medium in Pac’s career – a young man enamored with the concept of an early demise, but before the venom his Death Row days would bring about.

“Dear Mama” was never the most lyrical or technically sound record. Nevertheless, it stands as my personal favorite rap song ever recorded. Pac was a lot of things to a lot of people – even “irrelevant” or “overrated” to some now – but his 1995 timeless and gut-wrenchingly passionate ode to Afeni proved he was a mama’s boy at heart.

Much like the most of us.
