The Met Gala Theme Was Punk And Everyone (Except Emilia Clarke) Looked Ridiculous

To say the concept of “punk,” as a movement, genre of music, or concept, doesn’t mean anything anymore is ridiculous. As long as there people playing loud music quickly, in basements, garages, church halls, bowling alleys, wherever, the moshpitters will follow and the Dave Marsh-coined term will live on.

But the Met is sure doing their best to make sure punk’s dead and buried, entombed in a $254,050 coffin adorned with diamonds. Last night was the annual Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and its theme was “Punk Rock,” in honor of the museum’s latest exhibit, “Punk: From Chaos to Couture.” You know how every so often you’ll hear about a sorority throwing a Mexican-themed party? Well, that’s kind of what this was like, minus the racism — “HEY I KNOW WHAT’LL MAKE ME PUNK…EYELINER.” I blame Avril Lavigne.
