Call off the search for time travelers, we’ve got one right here. Photographer Chino Otsuka found a way to travel back to her childhood by splicing herself into images from her past.
She collected the visual meeting between old and young in her photo series, Imagine Finding Me. Otsuka defines the work as “embarking on the journey to where I once belonged and at the same time becoming a tourist in my own history.” From Sploid:
Sometimes she mimics what she did as a kid, other times she’s simply crossing paths with her childhood self and there’s even a few pictures where it looks like she’s taking care of her childhood self. It’s clever photo manipulation but a few of these shots really make it look like she was there the entire time.
If anything, it is a really cool concept. To be able to see your older self interacting with the younger version is both visually interesting and clever. I could see this becoming the next logical step in the re-staged childhood photos craze that is always clogging Tumblr.
All I know for sure is that if this were a real example of time travel, you could never interact with your former self. I’ve seen Time Cop, I know what happens.
