Watch This YouTube ‘Survivor Man’ Build A Makeshift Shelter Using Only His Two Bare Hands

I know some folks get offended when you post content that made its way through the halls of Reddit, but who cares. This is cool. It comes from the YouTube channel Primitive Technology, and it shows our hero building himself a primitive hut using only what he can find and his somewhat bare hands. If you watch closely, you can almost see the stubble form into a beard as the video moves along.

The details behind the construction were included in the description for the video, but it’s almost more interesting to just watch it in action:

I built this hut in the bush using naturally occurring materials and primitive tools. The hut is 2m wide and 2m long, the side walls are 1m high and the ridge line (highest point) is 2m high giving a roof angle of 45 degrees. A bed was built inside and it takes up a little less than half the hut. The tools used were a stone hand axe to chop wood, fire sticks to make fire, a digging stick for digging and clay pots to carry water. The materials used in the hut were wood for the frame, vine and lawyer cane for lashings and mud for daubing. Broad leaves were initially used as thatch which worked well for about four months before starting to rot. The roof was then covered with sheets of paper bark which proved to be a better roofing material. An external fireplace and chimney were also built to reduce smoke inside. The hut is a small yet comfortable shelter and provides room to store tools and materials out of the weather.

Clearly he’s done this sort of thing before, but that doesn’t make it any less cool. It’s a nice, neat little project that slowly manages to evolve over the course of the video. There are moments where you’ll probably think, “well that’s good enough,” but then he’ll add in mud or create a jug out of clay nearby. Then again, this is the Internet and I’m sure someone will say they’ve done better on their own.

Meanwhile, I’m sleeping under old newspapers and trash. Jokes on you, pal! I’m getting more time to sleep tonight!
