Somewhere tonight, a Pop Warner punter goes to sleep clutching his punting shoe, knowing that it’s possible, that his dream can come true. For there is now a punter in the NFL Hall of Fame and his name is Ray Guy and he is spectacular. Guy, along with Claude Humphrey, was selected by the Veterans Committee. During his 14-season career with the Raiders, Guy booted 1,049 punts for over one million yards (give or take), once booted a punt that hit the Superdome video screen, and once lassoed a tornado.

Joining the two Vets selection are TV host Michael Strahan as well as Andre Reed, Walter Jones, Derrick Brooks, and Aeneas Williams. The induction will take place on a ridiculously hot day in August before a preseason game that means nothing.

Missing the Hall? Most notably Marvin Harrison, Peyton Manning’s favorite target from his Indy days and all-around questionable guy. Also: Tony Dungy, Morten Anderson, Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Eddie DeBartolo, Kevin Greene, Charles Haley, John Lynch and Will Shields.

But you don’t worry about them, little punter. Your hopes and dreams – to see yourself on the wall in Canton – are still alive thanks to the Human Football Machine that is Ray Guy.
