Police In Afghanistan Encountered A Makeshift ‘Bird Bomb’ That Exploded After Being Shot And Killed

Frying a turkey can be the most dangerous type of bird, but the war on terror’s newest technological contribution just might be worse. Militants in northern Afghanistan decided to enact their own form of Thanksgiving by strapping explosive materials to a wild bird and setting it loose. Yes, they made a “bird bomb.” From NBC News:

When police spotted the white bird — which isn’t native to the area and appeared larger than an eagle — walking along a highway, they noticed it had an antenna and decided to shoot it, provincial police chief Maj. Gen. Abdul Nabi Ilham told NBC News on Saturday. The bird then exploded, he said, and “suspicious metal stuff” scattered around.

The “suspicious metal stuff” included components for a GPS, a small camera, and other piecemeal tech.

Police added that it is possible the bird had been “deployed” on a surveillance mission. Using animals in warfare or for suicide missions is unusual, but not unheard of.

Meanwhile, surviving fowl stateside rejoiced in their departed comrade’s valiant mission of freedom. Perhaps all brother and sister turkeys, chickens, ducks, and yes, even turduckens, will relieve themselves of the shackles of human consumption.
