Just in case those nosy crime scene investigators don’t have enough ways they can get us with blood evidence (you’d think they’d be fine with just DNA!), researchers in the Netherlands have found a way to estimate age from a drop of blood. The process measures the presence of sjTREC molecules in the blood, which are created by T cells to recognize threats like bacteria, parasites and viruses. Since these molecules decrease as you get older, the test can determine a general age from just how many are left.
As it just gives a general age range, the researchers at Erasmus MC who created the process are currently working to refine it to give more accurate results. So, all you would-be murderers out there…you have yet another reason to wipe up before you run off into the night.
