You’re Never Going To See Robert Downey Jr. Drunk (In An Iron Man Movie)

Don’t worry, it’s just Pepsi. Dark, sweet, seductive…Pepsi.

One of the facts pretty much everyone knows about comic book Iron Man, even those who don’t really read his books (raises hand) is that the guy’s had some serious battles with the bottle.

Tony’s Stark’s drinking problem was first dealt with during the 70s in the groundbreaking “Demon in a Bottle” storyline, and his alcoholism has been major character trait ever since. Or at least it is in Iron Man comic books — don’t expect demon alcohol to play a major part in Iron Man 3 or any future Shellhead movies…

Here’s what Iron Man 3 director Shane Black had to say when asked whether there were any classic Iron Man stories Disney/Marvel Studios expressly didn’t want to do.

“The drinking. […] I think we were just told by the studio that we should probably paint Tony Stark as being kind of an industrialist and a crazy guy, or even a bad guy at some points, but the Demon in a Bottle stuff of him being an alcoholic wouldn’t really fly. I don’t blame that.”

Come on Disney, take a chance. I mean, maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but I think Robert Downey Jr. might be able to pull off “drunk”.
