Donald Trump’s Obama-Era Tweets About Attacking Syria Have Come Back To Haunt Him

On Thursday evening, the Trump administration ordered an attack on Syria, following a chemical strike that killed dozens of civilians. More than 50 tomahawk missiles were launched in yesterday’s assault, which is equal to 60,000 pounds of explosives falling in the span of a minute.

“Tonight, I ordered a targeted military strike on the air field in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched,” President Trump said from his second home, a golf course in Florida. “It is in this vital national security of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons… Years of previous attempts at changing [Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s] behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically.”

The strike on Syria was the first major military action in Trump’s presidency, and as CNN noted, it “came nearly four years after the U.S. first concluded that Syrian forces had used chemical weapons in Syria.” At the time, Trump tweeted that the U.S. should “stay the hell out of Syria” and then-President Obama “must now start focusing on OUR COUNTRY, jobs, healthcare, and all of our many problems. Forget Syria and make America great again!”

Trump also wrote, in ALL-CAPS, “TO OUR VERY FOOLISH LEADER, DO NOT ATTACK SYRIA – IF YOU DO MANY VERY BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN & FROM THAT FIGHT THE U.S. GETS NOTHING!” Maybe it’s a Terminator situation, and 2013 Trump was warning 2017 Trump about the repercussions of attacking Syria. Either that, or everything he says means nothing.
