Following FBI director James Comey’s agreement to publicly testify in front of the Senate on Russia, CNN has published a report that discusses more about what he’ll reveal. This will apparently include confirmation of Comey’s accusation that President Trump pressured him to end his investigation into Michael Flynn’s ties to Russia. Comey might testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee as soon as next week.
According to sources that spoke to CNN, Comey has already spoken to special counsel Robert Mueller to set the boundaries of the testimony and ensure Comey doesn’t break the law by revealing certain information:
When he testifies, Comey is unlikely to be willing to discuss in any detail the FBI’s investigation into the charges of possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign — the centerpiece of the probe, this source said. But he appears eager to discuss his tense interactions with Trump before his firing, which have now spurred allegations that the president may have tried to obstruct the investigation.
The news should allay the fears of anyone who thought that the appointment of Mueller as special counsel might prevent Comey from appearing before Congressional investigators in their examinations of Russia-Trump ties.
According to Comey’s own memos, in separate meetings with President Trump shortly after he took office, Trump demanded Comey’s loyalty and urged Comey to drop the FBI’s investigation into Michael Flynn, the former national security advisor.
