Joe Biden’s charisma and appeal seems to transcend many party lines, and even if that’s not a universal ruling, that’s alright because he’s not running for the presidency. Biden’s biding his remaining time in office by being an American treasure and giving the best birthday presents to his best guy, Barack Obama. And not only is Biden officiating weddings for White House staffers, but he also hopes they get some quality family time too.

In the current issue of Esquire magazine (via Scott Smith), Biden’s family values come to the forefront via a November 2014 letter to his staff. This note will come as a sweet music to anyone who’s freaking out about squeezing their child’s school enrollment hour into a workweek. Biden to the rescue! He demands that his staff take time off for birthdays and celebratory events along with the not-so-fun stuff like illness and school errands:

“I would like to take a moment and make something clear to everyone. I do not expect nor do I want any of you to miss or sacrifice important family obligations for work … This is very important to me. In fact, I will go so far as to say that if I find out you are working with me while missing important family responsibilities, it will disappoint me greatly.”

Biden adds that he kept this rule as unwritten during his Senatorial tenure, but he felt the need to put it in writing. Perhaps he knows that no one wants to disappoint a vice president, but Biden’s not accepting that crap. His workers will enjoy family time or meet with his disapproval, which would be worse than missing the event itself (depending on whether one belongs to a tolerable family).
