Kim Davis’ Mugshot Hits The Internet As She Refuses Compromise That Would End Her Jail Time

To the delight and consternation of Twitter and others today, a judge ordered Kim Davis to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Now the county clerk’s mugshot is making the rounds on the internet. It was taken when she was booked at Kentucky’s Carter County Jail. And it’s pretty special. Especially considering how easily she could have avoided having her picture taken in such harsh lighting.

U.S. District Court Judge David L. Bunning ordered Davis to jail earlier today for being in contempt of court, after she argued that her religious beliefs would not allow her to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. In fact, she has refused to issue any marriage licenses, according to ABC news, to avoid discriminating against the couples in question. But, according to the New York Times, Judge Bunning had said that “her good faith belief is simply not a viable defense.” The Kentucky-based Courier-Journal quoted Bunning as saying, “This country has always had disagreements, but what makes this country different from other countries is that we respect the rule of law.”

The New York Times also reports that five out of six of Davis’ deputies had agreed to issue marriage licenses on her behalf, a solution that would have freed Davis if she had agreed. Yet she has refused to let her deputies do so, and remains jailed. Even so, Bunning said that he expects the deputies to comply.
