Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood are friends, which is sweet in the way that iconic Hollywood stars being friends off-screen is sweet and makes everybody imagine what their hangouts must be like. Do Streep and Eastwood drink wine and whiskey, respectively, while mourning the bygone Hollywood of their glory days? Do they have parties with the rest of the Bridges of Madison County cast where everybody watches various romantic comedies from the 80’s? We’ll never truly know. What we do know is that Clint Eastwood is a committed Republican (remember the chair?) and has publicly said that he will be supporting Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
For those who missed it, Eastwood recently commented in an Esquire interview that,
I’d have to go for Trump … you know, ’cause she’s declared that she’s gonna follow in Obama’s footsteps. There’s been just too much funny business on both sides of the aisle. She’s made a lot of dough out of being a politician. I gave up dough to be a politician,”
Well, noted Clinton supporter Meryl Streep happens to have some thoughts about that decision. In an interview with Variety, Streep reveals what she thought when she found out Eastwood’s opinion of Donald Trump. According to Vanity FairStreep says
“I’ll have to speak to him. I’ll have to correct that! I’m shocked. I really am. Because he’s more—I would have thought he would be more sensitive than that.”
Seeing as good ol’ Clint just called most of the voting class the “p***y generation,” the chances of him actually being more sensitive than that are unlikely. Let’s see if Meryl can put her stern face on and talk some sense into her long-time colleague and friend.
