Doc Rivers Thinks The Golden State Warriors ‘Deserved’ Their Championship

Doc Rivers is backtracking a bit on his comments that the Golden State Warriors’ championship last season was a product of luck, not skill. Rivers originally inferred that the Warriors got lucky on their way to the title because they didn’t have to play the Clippers or the Spurs. When Klay Thompson heard about the comments, he basically laughed. While speaking with reporters in Shenzhen, China, Rivers took the opportunity to clarify his comments.

“No, I don’t think the Warriors were lucky to win,” Rivers told reporters in Shenzhen, China on Saturday. “I think they deserved to win. I wish we could have played them – or the Spurs (could have played the Warriors) – but they still were the best team. They earned it.”

Well, so much for the rivalry that seemed to be brewing between the two teams. Rivers was still right – the Warriors did get lucky with their title win – but luck wasn’t the deciding factor. In fact, every team needs to get a little lucky to win the title. Sometimes, that luck manifests in perfect health, while other times it means the team that best matches up with yours falls before you can face them. Luck was on the Warriors side, but so was skill, excellent coaching, Stephen Curry and everything else that made them the best team in the NBA.
