Did Andre Iguodala Let Slip The Warriors Might Go After Kevin Durant In Free Agency?

Well, the Oklahoma City Thunder once again failed to make it to the NBA Finals. After arriving well ahead of schedule in 2012, the Thunder haven’t been able to make it out of the gauntlet out West, even with all-world talents like Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant on the squad. Taking the defending, 73-9 champs to seven games is nothing to shake a stick at, but it’s those failures that have opened the door for the rumors to swirl on KD’s impending free agency. The wishful thinking goes that KD might leave for greener, more championship-smelling pastures, and few teams offer as convincing a case as the Warriors.

It may seem strange to tab the team that knocked Durant out of the playoffs as his most likely destination if he indeed leaves Oklahoma City, but why would KD mess around building another super-team if he knows that the best squad in the NBA wants him? And if you’re wondering if they do indeed want him, allow Andre Iguodala’s Freudian slip after the game to convince you.

“He made some really tough shots, which is what I expected,” Iguodala said of Durant. “He’s a fighter and competitor and fought to the end. It must be fun playing with a guy like that.”

Iguodala quickly added a follow-up: “Unless I’m not playing with him.”

Oh, we see what you did there, Iggy. Of course, if the Dubs were to sign KD, Iguodala might have to be traded to clear space (and you can be sure Festus Ezeli and Harrison Barnes aren’t coming back). In fact, Andrew Bogut would have to be dealt, too. And lets not forget that Durant has another awesome suitor this summer, the team he beat in the preceding round.

Except, Durant beat them, which doesn’t give them as much leverage as a possible team-up with the Warriors might.

Chances are neither team will land the prime free agent this summer, and the Warriors would have to really ask themselves if he’s worth it should they go on to repeat as champions. How many 73-win teams who won back-to-back titles blow up their ancillary pieces to add another superstar?

We can’t believe we even asked the question. This all better left for after the Finals, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
