If you’re a Philadelphia 76ers fan and you’re desperately looking for signs of optimism about the upcoming season, maybe the budding relationship between the franchise’s two key players is what you need.

Ben Simmons, the first pick in the 2016 draft, and Joel Embiid, the third pick in the 2014 draft that has not played an NBA game yet due to foot surgeries, are developing off-court chemistry, according to Metro Philadelphia.

“He’s a great player, so I’m looking forward to playing with him,” Simmons said. “Off the court we’re like brothers. We have fun.”

“I feel 100 percent and ready to get started,” Embiid said. “My summer’s been great. We’ve been working out a lot.”

They’ve even had some cutesy Twitter banter since Simmons was drafted.

That’s all well and good, but funny exchanges on Twitter do not mean anything when it comes to turning around a perennial loser like the 76ers. I have some enjoyable exchanges on Twitter with all sorts of people but that doesn’t mean you want to build an NBA franchise around us, at least not at my age and with my achy knee. I’m more of a guy on the bench who will wave his towel if you drain a 3-pointer. I will take the NBA league minimum to do this, Sixers.
