Horace Grant Didn’t Always Need Those Goggles, But He Kept Wearing Them For The Kids

Horace Grant is a four-time NBA champion, but the most famous thing about him might be his eyewear.

On Thursday, the NBA world learned why he wore those goggles all those years. Grant, as the story went for years, was legally blind and needed them to see. Grant took part in an AMA on the Chicago Bulls’ Reddit on Thursday and added in some new details when asked about the goggles that made him stand out on the court all those years.

I got them because I was legally blind. I wore em because of that for a few years. After a few years I got Lasik surgery, but I kept wearing them without the perscription (sic) lenses because I had grandparents and parents come up to me and thank me for wearing them. Their kids and grandkids would get made fun of by wearing protective eyewear playing sports, so I kept wearing them to help make it cool to wear goggles for the kids.

Grant’s look was definitely distinctive. His goggles even changed colors multiple times over his career — going from black to white and even red while with the Bulls. And they always matched team colors. Grant’s goggles even got a staring role in a Nike ad earlier this year. Pretty cool if you ask me. Leave it to Grant to make Rec Specs not only okay to wear, but a dang fashion statement all those years.
