LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are preparing for Game 1 of their NBA Finals rematch with the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night in Oakland, but the Cavs’ superstar is now dealing with an unfortunate distraction as his Los Angeles home was vandalized overnight with a racial slur.

According to the LAPD (via NBC Los Angeles), the gate in front of James’ house was spray painted over early Wednesday morning and the police arrived at 7 a.m. local time.

The gate has since been covered up, but according to TMZ, the N-word was spray painted across the gate of his Brentwood residence, but James and his family were not at the house at the time.

The situation is an ugly reminder of the continued racial issues that face prominent black figures in this country. As James and other NBA stars have become more vocal about racial, social, and political issues over the past few years, there has been the inevitable push back and this incident is the worst manifestation of that.

The police are investigating the hate crime and hoping to use security camera footage from neighboring houses to find the perpetrators. James has not commented on the situation as of yet.
