Rajon Rondo has come under a ton of criticism over the last 24 hours. On Monday afternoon, longtime NBA referee Bill Kennedy came out as gay, saying that he was “following in the footsteps of others who have self-identified in the hopes that will send a message to young men and women in sports that you must allow no one to make you feel ashamed of who you are.” This came several days after Rondo used several homophobic slurs toward Kennedy after the Kings guard was tossed from a game in Mexico City.

Shortly after this story dropped, Rondo took to Twitter to discuss the incident. It didn’t quite read like an apology, it was more of a general statement about the incident that didn’t seem all that genuine. Of course, this led to people criticizing Rondo even more, saying that he issued a non-apology when he really should have said something more sincere.

Rondo heard these criticisms, and on Tuesday, the former All-Star released a full apology about the incident and his way of handling it on Monday afternoon. He called his statement toward Kennedy “unacceptable,” and took time to clarify his tweets from the day before. Here’s the entire statement:

Because of his comments toward Kennedy, Rondo will miss Tuesday’s game between the Kings and the Houston Rockets.
