Would Rajon Rondo Be A Good Fit For The Bulls?

According to multiple reports, free agent point guard Rajon Rondo met with the Chicago Bulls on Friday to discuss a potential deal.

It’s been an odd couple of years for the former NBA champ, the low-lights of which have been a disastrous stint with the Dallas Mavericks and an up and down year with the Sacramento Kings last season that saw him get suspended for an ugly incident in which he fired off a homophobic diatribe at referee Bill Kennedy. That, along with his inability to spread the floor with his busted jump shot, have caused the rest of the league to cool on him considerably (in fact, we had him ranked dead last on our list of the top 50 available free agents this offseason).

The Bulls, however, have a giant hole in the backcourt now that they’ve parted ways with Derrick Rose, and the current free agent crop is notoriously bereft of quality point guards. Signing Rondo might be a move born purely out of necessity and/or lack of options. But can he potentially be a good fit?

It’s a complicated question. Rondo’s aforementioned lack of outside shooting has made him something of a relic in the modern NBA. Chicago didn’t successfully transition into the uptempo style they were hoping to achieve in Fred Hoiberg’s first season at the helm, and a ball-pounding player like Rondo who can’t space the floor wouldn’t move them any closer to that goal.

By jettisoning Rose and Joakim Noah, it also appeared the Bulls were looking to get younger, and the 30-year-old Rondo doesn’t fit that bill either. However, if he’s amenable, signing him to a short-term contract would buy them some time to maybe finagle a trade next season or just wait to hit the market next summer when the free agent point guard pool will be much deeper.
