Ricky Rubio Says Andrew Wiggins ‘Is Going To Be MVP One Day’

Few, if any, young stars in the NBA have a higher ceiling than reigning Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins. In his first year in the league, Wiggins showed why he is one of the most highly-regarded young prospects of the last decade after averaging 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game for the young Timberwolves. While those per-game numbers are solid, his athleticism was obvious any time you saw him on the floor.

If Wiggins continues to improve – which he should, because his supporting cast keeps getting better and he’s only 20 years old – it’s fair to assume that he can become one of the elite players in the NBA. In fact, according to one of his teammates, he has the potential to be the league’s best player. Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio believes that Wiggins is going to be the league MVP someday.

“I think Wiggins is going to be an MVP one day,” said Rubio, who missed a large chunk of last season due to a severely sprained ankle injury.

“He’s a great player, [has] fit in this league very well since day one, and I think as a team we’re really young but we’re adding some veterans that’s going to help us to grow up and follow where we’re going to go – going to make the playoffs.”

There’s still probably a bit of a way to go for Wiggins, as he has a few holes in his game that can be improved on, and the race for the league MVP is going to be crazy for the next few years because of guys like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, and James Harden. Having said that, if Wiggins can become a better all-around player – namely a better scorer after shooing just 43.7 percent from the field and 31 percent from three in his inaugural campaign – it’s not crazy at all to think that he can be the league’s Most Valuable Player somewhere down the line.
