Russell Westbrook Gets A Special ‘Thank You’ From The Biggest Building In Oklahoma City

When Kevin Durant left the Thunder, there were some people hurting in Oklahoma City. Fans were angered, jerseys were sold at a tremendous discount, and people even wrote some mean Yelp reviews on Kevin Durant’s old restaurant’s page. Durant was an icon in Oklahoma City, and seeing him move to Golden State was unpleasant for the city. Naturally, Russell Westbrook’s agreement to sign an extension with the Thunder is generating a different reaction.

A lot of people are thankful Westbrook is staying with Oklahoma City, including the state’s tallest building.

The Devon Energy Center, the 44th tallest building in the United States, was lit up with a thank-you message to Westbrook. In big, blue letters the words “Thank You Russ” appeared on the side of the building. It said “Thank You” and then it changed to “Russ,” because otherwise the message wouldn’t have fit, given how big the letters were. That’s just a little bit of extra effort put into thanking Westbrook for committing to OKC.

In terms of mediums for messages, big letters on the side of a skyscraper are a good way to make sure it is seen. Obviously, the fact that Durant left the Thunder probably played into this a bit. Somebody wanted to make sure that Westbrook knew they appreciated him staying after Durant didn’t. The Thunder are Oklahoma’s only major professional sports team. Having Westbrook stay is big for the city. And it’s certainly worthy of giant blues lights on the side of a building.
