Steve Kerr Says Gregg Popovich ‘Has No Business Coaching’ Unless The Spurs Win The Title

Steve Kerr is still basking in glow of the Golden State Warriors first Larry O’Brien Trophy since 1975. True to his fiery, relentless, and often sarcastic competitive nature, though, he’s already concerned by the prospect of winning one next season – or cracking wise about it at the very least.

The Warriors coach stopped by the NBA TV booth on Sunday during his Summer League squad’s matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Touching on the San Antonio Spurs’ incredible free-agency haul, Kerr quipped that Gregg Popovich – a five-time champion and five-time Coach of the Year – “has no business” coaching in the NBA unless he leads LaMarcus Aldridge and company to the 2016 title.

Here’s Kerr via Golden State’s website:

You look at what San Antonio did getting Aldridge. I mean if they don’t win the whole thing next year it’s clearly the coach’s fault. I mean if Pop can’t win the whole thing with that roster then he has no business coaching in this league.

Classic.

Kerr, of course, played under Popovich from 1998-99 to 2000-01, then went back to the Alamo City for his NBA swan song in 2002-03 – when he won a fifth championship ring. The two coaches share a unique bond, one no doubt furthered last February when they met for wine following a Spurs win over the Warriors.

Could Kerr and Popovich be in for a post-series drink next spring following the Western Conference Finals? Considering the incredible strength of their respective teams, we certainly wouldn’t be surprised.
