JaVale McGee’s Old Landlord Sued Him Big Time For Having An Unauthorized Pet

Experiencing a career resurgence with the Golden State Warriors, JaVale McGee has shown that on the right team, he could be an excellent contributor. It did, however, take McGee several teams to finally find the right fit in Golden State as he was a NBA vagabond of sorts, making brief stops in Philadelphia and Dallas before joining the Warriors at the beginning of the season.

Like previous stops, McGee’s tenure in Dallas last year was rather unremarkable. Yet, the athletic big man did make his presence known in Dallas. For all of the wrong reasons that is.

According to legal documents obtained by Deadspin’s Patrick Redford, McGee was sued by the landlord of his Dallas apartment for a number of wrongdoings. McGee allegedly left several damages to the apartment, was way late in rent and, perhaps the most interesting of his transgressions, the Warriors big man had a pet cat despite pets not being allowed.

To get a better idea of the rule-breaking pet, here’s a picture of McGee’s hairless cat Raja:

Like most pet owners, it is easy to understand why McGee kept Raja for companionship instead of parting ways with the cat. Plus, despite his hairless body, which could be off-putting to some, Raja looks like a fine feline.

It is strange, though, that McGee didn’t just find an apartment that allows pets. Sure, that probably means McGee would’ve had to pay an annoying monthly pet fee along with some other fees. But then again, he is an NBA player and can clearly afford many of life’s luxuries, so paying a monthly pet fee would not have hurt his bank account in the least bit.

Now, instead of living somewhere that allows pets, McGee has to pay his former landlord $26,000, which covered the costs for back rent, property damage, legal fees and keeping Raja in the apartment. It was a costly mistake that could’ve all been avoided if McGee simply paid his rent on time and lived somewhere that actually allows pets.
