Gravity earned $44.3 million to take the top spot for the second weekend in a row, and gird yourself for statistical minutia, because that was the (*deep breath*) “best non-holiday hold ever for a movie that opened over $50 million.” Basically, people liked it, and told their friends, and more people saw it.
Meanwhile, Machete Kills? More like Machete BOMBS! (Sorry). The largely unclamored for sequel to a movie based on a trailer earned just $3.8 million, less than a third of the original’s opening and “one of the worst openings ever for a movie in over 2,500 locations, and it’s also one of the worst openings of 2013.”
Even among the people who were excited to see the sequel of a movie that felt 30 minutes too long in the first place gave it sub-mediocre B- Cinemascore. But hey, as I always say, it takes a bitch to make a bitch, and I smell fish taco.
Seeing a movie I loved do great business and one I had no interest in bomb makes me feel connected, like a real member of a society I understand. It’s a nice change from trying to watch a few minutes of Duck Dynasty on the plane and wonder what the f*ck is wrong with everyone.
