Watch: This Year's Tropfest Winning Short: The Story of Bubble Boy

Australia’s

Sean Ascroft and his film, The Story of Bubble Boy, won the Motion Picture Association-sponsored first prize of $5,000. His film about a sad outcast wrestling with his demons captured the hearts and minds of the jury and the crowd in attendance with its story of being trapped by the past and redeemed by the future.

I hate to say it, but I’m kind of disappointed with the winner. It’s basically just a cute poem spiced up with some B-roll. Not to mention, no one covered in bubble wrap is going to be an outcast. Bubble wrap is like catnip for humans. Or perhaps I just expected too much, because last year’s winner, Animal Beatbox (watch it below) is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.

I also enjoyed Bad Yoghurt, from 2007, which is really slow and pretty dumb, but I have to admit it made me laugh a lot, and the synopsis is nothing short of brilliant:

On hot summer’s day, a sexy girl sits by a pool. She eats some hot sexy yoghurt. But everything is not hot and sexy… because the yoghurt is bad.

Is it just me, or do a lot of Australian girls kind of look like Dobermans?

And while it has nothing to do with Tropfest, I’m reposting Baby Trashes Bar at Las Palmas because it’s probably the best short of all time.
