Shigeru Miyamoto Let Slip That ‘Pikmin 4’ Is In Development And ‘Very Close To Completion’

Are you a fan of weird real-time strategy games featuring adorable multicolored ant men? Well, then brace yourself for some great news, because Pikmin 4 is in the works and may arrive sooner than you might expect. Pikmin creator Shigeru Miyamoto dropped the news in an interview with Eurogamer, saying Pikmin 4 was “actually very close to completion.” Nintendo later confirmed the news in a brief statement.

“We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development, but that is all we can confirm at present.”

This is surprising news, as the waits between Pikmin games tend to be excruciatingly long (there was a gap of nine years between Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3). Thus far, there’s no word on what platform Pikmin 4 will appear on, and some folks are speculating it might be a launch title for Nintendo’s next console, the NX. Personally, I think that’s fairly unlikely, given the “very close to completion” timetable Miyamoto has given. Pikmin 3 was built on a very solid engine, so I’m guessing Pikmin 4 is a quick and fairly easy sequel designed to tide Wii U owners over until the NX arrives.

So, who’s excited to start exploring digital gardens again? Pikmin 3 was possibly the best game in the series and on the Wii U period, so I’m definitely hyped. Hopefully more information on Pikmin 4 will come scampering up our garden path soon.
