PlayStation 2 Classics Are On Their Way To The PlayStation 4 Via Emulation According To Sony

The PlayStation 4 is a pretty damn solid console, or at least it is until you want to play a game from Sony’s vast back-catalog of PSOne, PS2 and PS3 games. Sony’s most recent system isn’t backwards compatible, and there aren’t any PSOne or PS2 classics available in the PlayStation store. You can stream a limited number of PS3 games through PlayStation Now service, but you don’t own them, and the service can be unreliable if you don’t have a top-notch internet connection.

Well, things may be looking up for retro-gaming fans. A special bundle for the recently released Star Wars Battlefront contained a handful of PS2 Star Wars games, and it appears as if the older games are running on the console via emulation. This is significant, as it seemingly indicates that Sony has created a PS2 emulator for the PS4, which means classic PS2 titles can now be put on the system easily and cheaply. Without an emulator, each PS2 game would have to be individually rebuilt and reprogrammed for Sony’s current-gen console.

With speculation flying, Sony has confirmed that they’re “working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation.”

I’d love to play through the classic Silent Hill games again on PS4, and I admittedly mostly missed out on the PS2’s God of War and Final Fantasy titles. What about you? Which PS2 games would you want to re-play, or experience for the first time, on the PS4?
