The New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Movie Wants To Be A Fantasy Version Of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Hollywood’s last shot at making a Dungeons & Dragon movie may have been a smoldering garbage fire, but that isn’t going to stop Warner Bros. from breaking out the dice and rolling up a new D&D flick. Warner’s Dungeons & Dragons movie was announced last August, and now we have some more details about the film, courtesy of producer Roy Lee. According to Lee, they’re hoping to deliver a fantasy-flavored Guardians of the Galaxy vibe with the movie.

“This new Dungeons & Dragons will be a Guardians of the Galaxy-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe. Because when you think of all the Hobbit movies and The Lord of the Rings, they have an earnestness to them, and to see something fun, a Raiders romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not seen before.”

Okay, well, that makes a certain amount of sense, but one of the reasons 2000’s Dungeons & Dragons movie was such a bomb was that it over-relied on lame comedy. It kind of sounds like Warner Bros. is making the same mistakes all over again.

Another issue with the last Dungeons & Dragons movie was that it was more-or-less just a generic fantasy movie, with very little connection to D&D lore. According to Lee, that won’t be the case this time around…

“Everyone who’s involved with it now, especially the writer of the first draft, have been fans from the very beginning starting with Chainmail, which turned into Dungeons & Dragons, so you’ll see things that are very faithful to the source material as well as new elements are being incorporated with help from Wizards of the Coast, who are giving a lot of input on the script.”

That sounds promising at least, but I’m still unsure about this project. I just don’t think an RPG series that’s all about creating your own adventures makes much sense as a movie, but maybe I’ll be proven wrong. What do you dungeon masters think? Is a good Dungeons & Dragons movie possible?
