Five Games: ‘Theatrhythm Final Fantasy’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Post-Apocalyptic RPG

Wasteland 2 (PC, Mac & Linux, Sept. 19th)

Kickstarter success story Wasteland 2 finally comes out in complete form this week. The original Wasteland is the forgotten predecessor to the Fallout series, and Wasteland 2 looks to provide some good, classic, isometric post-apocalyptic fun. You can grab Wasteland 2 right here.

This Week’s Strategy Game

Reprisal Universe (PC & Mac, Sept. 15th)

Hey, remember Populous? Well, Reprisal Universe is essentially a new Populous featuring a nice retro art style. Relive the days when strategy games could be pocket-sized and charming instead of sprawling and dry. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Cooking Game

Cooking Mama 5 (3DS, Sept. 16th)

Yup, somehow the Cooking Mama series is still going strong. Not sure what Cooking Mama 5 adds to the recipe, but unfortunately you still won’t be able to eat the food.

This Week’s Indie Side-Scroller

Murasaki Baby (PS Vita, Sept. 16th)

Murasaki Baby is 2D puzzle game with an Edward Gorey-esque art style, developed by guys who used to work on Suda 51 games like Killer7 and Shadows of the Damned. So yeah, it’s dark, it’s weird, but it looks interesting and it’s the rare game to make innovative use of the Vita’s touch screen.

Pick of the Week

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (3DS, Sept. 16th)

Like Final Fantasy music? Unless you’ve somehow never played a Final Fantasy game, of course you do. The Theatrhythm titles are fun rhythm games based on Final Fantasy’s vast catalog of memorable music — Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call in particular features a whopping 221 songs (even more if you count DLC) for you to tap along to. If you’ve ever loved a Final Fantasy you’re going to want to give this a shot.

Most other games are still hiding in the wake of Destiny, but there’s still some fun stuff coming out this week, particularly if you’re a handheld gamer. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
