Whenever DC or Marvel make a bold move, there’s always going to be a contingent of fans who assume it’s a fearful reaction to the competition. Sure enough, no sooner did Marvel confirm that it’s skipping San Diego Comic-Con this year than rumors started that it’s because they were afraid of DC bulldozing them.
The claim comes via Umberto Gonzalez, better known as El Mayimbe on the internet and a guy who’s kind of a coin-flip when it comes to accuracy:
Marvel found out internally that Warners is going supernova with their DC presentation which will include Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Wonder Woman. Quite a formidable lineup and a really tough act to follow for any other studio.
Personally, I’m skeptical. Not of the fact that Marvel thinks it would have a tough time drawing attention, but that this scared them off. Elsewhere in El Mayimbe’s piece, he admits that he’s hearing Captain America: Civil War, Marvel’s de facto next Avengers movie, won’t have footage ready or Spider-Man on film until August. And by a complete and total coincidence, Disney’s big fan convention, D23, is happening in August. I think it’s more likely Disney decided to put all its money towards its Star Wars panels, and let Marvel skip a year.
But insisting Marvel is afraid of DC is a way better story, so I can’t blame people for rolling with that one. Really, DC and Marvel should settle this by adapting the ’90s crossover into a Netflix miniseries. That would be far more entertaining.
