Michael B. Jordan And Kate Mara Fielded Racist And Sexist Questions In An Awkward Interview

The Fantastic Four reboot will soon arrive, just in case you forgot or wanted to forget about this franchise’s reimagining. Kate Mara, who steps in as Sue Storm, and Michael B. Jordan, who plays Johnny Storm, endured an awkward radio interview from two Rock 100.5 Atlanta DJs who didn’t understand how the two can play siblings.

Jordan has already confronted critics of his casting and argued that he’s the right guy for the Human Torch role. Stan Lee agrees, which should have been the end of the controversy. Nope. DJ Jason Bailey seemed bewildered at the characters’ sibling relationship: “You’re white and you’re black. How does that happen?” Jordan calmly replied, “They could be raised as brother and sister. There’s a whole bunch of family dynamics that could be without the obvious adoption.”

DJ Southside Steve turned to Mara to take down her new pixie hairdo: “You’re way, way hot. Why’d you cut the hair? Your hair was beautiful.” Mara joked, “This is a great interview. I cut my hair for a movie I just did.” Steve persisted, “What would you cut your hair for?” Mara continued, “They asked me to! I’m an actress. I have to be a chameleon.” The DJ seemed puzzled before blurting, “I’m a toe guy, your toes are fine.” Then Mara exclaimed, “Wow,” and the attending publicists ended the interview.

In a followup interview with Buzzfeed, DJ Jason said he was genuinely perplexed at the siblings’ relationship. He “figured with this new hipster version,” something was amiss, and “wouldn’t you want to know how that happened?” Jason also defended Steve’s foot obsession with a shrug: “Steve likes girl’s toes. People should be appreciative when they get complimented.”
