If you were busy speculating on how the new version of Godzilla was going to do battle with King Kong, you might want to start taking it seriously. Legendary and Warner Bros. are seriously bringing the two classic film monsters together on the big screen, and the buildup might match Pacquiao/Mayweather in hype (but the payoff should be a lot better).
According to Empire, with some help from the Hollywood Reporter, the plan is to release Kong: Skull Island in March 2017, followed by Godzilla 2 in 2018, leading to the mega clash at some point in 2020. That said, Empire points out that some of the language in Fox’s statement might lead to more than meets the eye:
“All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.”
By calling them heroes, Empire theorizes that we might be seeing some sort of team-up by the end of it all. Think Jurassic World, but on a much larger scale. Like The Avengers for Kaiju (although I thought Godzilla 2 was meant to be the Destroy All Monsters moment). It should be a cool march to 2020, with plenty of debate on how it will all happen (and how it could very well be a disaster). No matter, it will never be worse than the 1998 Godzilla.
