A ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Producer Hints At A New Skywalker

It’s been running around nerd circles for a while that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will have a Skywalker child as a character. It makes sense; 30 years is a long time and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of birth control (or child services, come to think of it) in a galaxy far, far away. But the production team is rather coy with details… which doesn’t mean they won’t let something slip occasionally.

Talking to that crucial source of movie news, the Costco newsletter, Kathleen Kennedy explained a few things, like that Episodes VII-IX are core “Saga” films, while everything else is a standalone “Anthology” film. Why?

The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story.

That sure sounds like there’s a Skywalker baby running around. Which, in turn, raises the question of who precisely it is. Personally, while the argument is between whether it’s Rey or Finn, and the production has dropped the occasional vague hint about Rey, my money’s actually on it being Kylo Ren. We already know that Ren isn’t a surname, but a title. And, to be honest, having an obsession with Vader is just kind of weird. The guy’s big achievement was murdering children and crushing planets in his Force-powered fist; he’s not a role model. You don’t jury-rig a lightsaber and invade a teddy bear sanctuary to defile a grave without some deeper issues.

But, hey, we’ll find out soon: The movie’s out in December.
