Despite the extravaganza of superheroes set to clash with each other throughout Captain America: Civil War, Bucky Barnes himself, Sebastian Stan, is promising that the film won’t lose sight of its human element. In an interview on the set of the next Marvel Studios film, Entertainment Weekly spoke with the actor about the challenges he faced while playing the role and finding the internal struggle in a character whose identity is a mystery even to himself.

Stan talks of a journey for the character to rediscover himself and how he’s evolved over time, saying:

This movie certainly deals with what’s happened to him. I mean, what have we gotten as a result of Bucky and the Winter Soldier? You know, here’s the guy when you merge the two. This is what came out. To me, he’s never really going to be Bucky Barnes again. There’s going to be recognizable things about him, but his path through the [experiences of] Winter Soldier is always going to be there, haunting him. He recognizes his past, but at the same time he’s sort of a new character, too.

The Captain America movies have done a passable job at setting up the basis of Bucky and who he is, but few would say that the character and his friendship with Cap resonate on a meaningful level, so Stan’s words are encouraging that the film will delve into him much more. The Marvel films have already reinvigorated previously stale characters in the past (compare Natasha in Iron Man 2 to The Winter Soldier) so it’s entirely possible that they can pull off the same trick again with Bucky Barnes.
