‘Alien: Covenant’ Is Bringing Back Noomi Rapace After All

Heeeeere’s Noomi!

At the end of Prometheus (and this shouldn’t be a spoiler at this point), Noomi Rapace’s character, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, heads off into space with the disembodied head of the Michael Fassbender android (David) to look for the Engineers who created humanity. That seemed like an obvious starting point for Alien: Covenant, which has been described as part of a Star Wars-inspired Prometheus trilogy or quadrilogy. But then director Ridley Scott suggested Rapace wouldn’t be rejoining the cast which includes Fassbender and add newcomers Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, and Demian Bichir.

Now Deadline reports Noomi Rapace is back after all, and she’s been spotted “in Australia and on the set to shoot weeks worth [sic] of scenes in Scott’s film.” Wait, so, how many script changes have been recently made for her character to be included again? It seemed they had ditched her character and were making a new trilogy with “a pretty hard R” rating and very loose ties to Prometheus. Here was a synopsis for Alien: Covenant released last fall:

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, which connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

There’s no mention of Rapace’s character in that “sole inhabitant” scenario, so are her scenes a flashback sequence? Ridley had previously hinted at the two characters having a road trip in space, so perhaps that could take place before landing on the planet and losing Rapace’s character somewhere along the way. We’ll see if it’s really “game over” for Dr. Elizabeth Shaw when Alien: Covenant opens on August 4, 2017.
