Everything We Learned About ‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash,’ And The DC CW Shows At Comic-Con

While Wonder Woman and Doctor Strange stole the show at San Diego Comic-Con, there was a lot we learned about the CW’s ever-growing collection of superhero shows. Here are the reels that were shown, and what was revealed at the panels.

Arrow

Going into its fifth season, it looks like Arrow is going to be training some rookies. It looks like Diggle (David Ramsey) and Thea (Willa Holland) aren’t really around, and even Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) has a new boyfriend. So Ollie will be training a new crew of heroes, including Curtis (Echo Kellum, newly promoted to series regular), who hilariously chokes on the salmon ladder.

As for other plotlines, Ollie is going to be getting back to defending the city while being an absolutely terrible mayor, according to Amell, and the show will apparently be scaling it back a bit. No more domes, no more nukes, just good old fashioned crime and punching. But yes, Laurel will be back, as Katie Cassidy has signed a free-floating deal that lets her appear on any Arrowverse show.

The Flash

Just as a reminder, at the end of the last season, Barry saved his mom, thus screwing up the entire timeline. Despite doing that, as we can see from this trailer, Barry has kept his speed but is trying to live as a civilian. But, of course, his picture perfect world has a few cracks, not the least of which is that Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) is running around as Kid Flash and, uh, Barry has illegally imprisoned the Reverse Flash, Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher) in a cell without a toilet. Considering Letscher is a cast regular on Legends of Tomorrow next season, we rate Eobard’s likelihood of staying in captivity somewhere around 0%. There’s also yet another mysterious speedster running around in a black suit.

Also revealed is that the big villain next season will be Doctor Alchemy, voiced by Jigsaw himself, Tobin Bell. As for crossovers, Felicity will be coming back, reviving our hopes that she and Barry will begin the great awkward nerd romance of television history.

Legends of Tomorrow

The big news out of Comic-Con is that Legends of Tomorrow, easily the most “comic book”-esque of the DC shows, is bringing back the Legion of Doom. Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough), Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), the aforementioned Eobard Thawne, and Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold will all be coming back as a team of bad guys trying to change the course of history. Or maybe they’ll just sit around a room trading snarky zingers. Really, we’d watch either.

The promo reel above shows off McDonough in a sharp ’40s gangster outfit, and we’ve had hints we’ll be visiting the WWII era before. It’s also going to be heavy on the guest stars, as Ollie is turning up in an early episode, Jonah Hex is coming back, and they’ll be introducing an entirely new slate of heroes: In addition to Hourman, who turned up in the last moments of the first season finale, Obsidian, Stargirl, Dr. Mid-Nite and Commander Steel will all be turning up as the Justice Society of America.

Supergirl

Sadly we didn’t get much out of the Supergirl panel, as the show is still figuring out its transition to the CW, and its heavy effects work means a trailer is a tricky proposition. But we did learn that they’re considering a musical episode, and Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will be rocking the spit curl. They also revealed who’s in the pod from last season, actor Chris Wood. They just didn’t reveal who he was playing.

In all, it looks like DC’s shows are coming back with even more heroes, which we can’t wait to liveblog. The premieres start in October.
