Bryan Cranston knows people love seeing him in villainous garb. This is one reason why he’s completely willing to keep embracing his Walter White image whereas other actors would fret over being typecast. For certain, he’d never be able to shake the role anyway, even though he built a diverse career before Breaking Bad made everyone say his name.
Cranston also realizes that nostalgia is a powerful thing, which is why he’s teased his fans about the vague possibility of more Malcolm In The Middle. He’s a chameleon who completely disappears as Lyndon B. Johnson, which is the HBO role he’s promoting now (for All The Way). Yet Cranston knows his fans would love to seem get “nasty” again, so he’s willing to be bad again — for Marvel:
“You know what I’d like to do? I’d like to do some big superhero villain in some Marvel classic. Create one from scratch … I don’t know what I would do but it would be nasty.”
Well, Cranston would be phenomenal in such a role, but the catch is right there in his statement. He wants to play an original character that hasn’t been created yet. Marvel could take the time to draw up a new character for the comics, which would take time. Or Marvel could bypass the comic-book phase and create a new character specifically for a movie, but that’s not their style, and comic fans don’t enjoy seeing their mythology fudged. This rule would stand even for Cranston.
Are there any preexisting Marvel characters fit for Cranston? That’s a tough dream casting to hash out, but he could always head to the DC side for a gig with a Vertigo character. Crantson would be perfect to join Tom Hardy in the upcoming 100 Bullets adaptation. I’m thinking Agent Graves is riiiight up his alley.
