For a long time Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars) had been attached to direct The Power of the Dark Crystal, a sequel to the 1982 fantasy film. That sequel seemed to be going nowhere, but now the Henson Company has appointed new directors, Australian brothers Peter and Michael Spierig, who are used to creating alternate worlds, considering they wrote/directed Undead and Daybreakers. Does this mean the Skeksis are going to be zombies or vampires?
The sequel is set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie, when the world has once again fallen into darkness, and follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet. Like the original, the new movie will mix live action and puppets, as well as visual effects. [SciFiWire, who also have the full press release]
The movie will be 3D (of course it will), with a screenplay by Craig Pearce, the writer of a bunch of Baz Luhrmann movies. So will the Gelflings sing a Bon Jovi song medley or whatever the hell that was in Moulin Rouge? Well, whatever they do with the project I’ll be happy with it as long as it gives all my old elementary school classmates nightmares like the first one did, ’cause screw those guys. Red rover, red rover, maybe I didn’t want to ever come over there anyway. Jerks.
