Remember when George Lucas announced that, as part of his ongoing crusade to stomp your childhood flat, he was going to monkey with the Original Trilogy, again, by making it 3D, after he made the prequels 3D for no good reason?
Yeah, apparently the House of Mouse has decided that was a terrible idea.

I learned of this decision just now from Lucasfilm‘s promotional partners who are telling me the studio now owned by Disney wants to focus only on “rebooting the franchise” with three new Star Wars films. This surprising decision follows the underwhelming box office performance of Episode I: The Phantom Menace re-released in 3D in February 2012.
This decision isn’t that surprising, actually: The Phantom Menace, when rereleased, only grossed about $100 million worldwide, which is roughly a tenth of what the movie brought in when it first came out, and fans actually still eagerly looked forward to a Star Wars movie.
Apparently, fans voting with their wallets did at least help influence the decision, so we are thankfully free of any 3D Star Wars movies.
Now, Disney. Since we’re on the topic of money… and fan desire… how about an original cut of the Original Trilogy? Or, if you can’t be bothered, mayhap farm it out to the Criterion Collection? We’re sure they could find the time to dig up an original print and restore it, call us crazy.
