‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Urges You To Join The Earth Space Defense In New Featurettes

Independence Day: Resurgence is a smarter movie than it strictly needs to be. Okay, maybe “smart” is pushing it, but Roland Emmerich could have just re-shot the script for the first Independence Day with new landmarks subbed in and people would have been happy. Instead, the premise is that humanity has salvaged the aliens’ technology and come together as one to prepare for the invaders’ inevitable return. This includes founding the Earth Space Defense, the new military force designed to welcome the aliens back to Earth should they come back.

Fox has released a couple of new featurettes — essentially faux propaganda videos — which serve as an introduction to the ESD. The first video, which you can check out above, serves up a brief history of the ESD, and includes lots of new footage of sexy pilots and space jets doing their thing. The second video is a recruiting ad, featuring a father talking about how proud he is of his ESD pilot daughter. This one feels very similar to real U.S. Forces recruiting ads, and in fact even has an official U.S. Army logo attached to it, which is… interesting. Does the army know something they’re not letting on? Start preparing those tinfoil hats, folks.

Independence Day: Resurgence blows up theaters on June 24.
