Warning: If you’re still avoiding Batman v Superman spoilers, fly your butt on out of here.
Supervillain plans don’t always make a lot of sense, but Lex Luthor’s scheme in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was particularly hard to follow. So, Lex spends the movie setting up Superman to look bad, then blackmails him into killing Batman for, uh, reasons? Then when that doesn’t work, he’s just “screw it” and releases Doomsday? It’s hard to find a consistent motivation there.
Well, in a recent interview with IGN, Jesse Eisenberg tried to make sense of Lex’s late-movie actions:
“I think Lex becomes increasingly unhinged throughout the movie. I also think he’s a guy who has 40 back-up plans and so when one thing doesn’t work out he has another and if that doesn’t work out he has another, which is why I think he never feels that threatened by Superman and Batman because he knows he always has the leverage. His final act, [releasing Doomsday], was this kind of like last-ditch effort to leave it all on the table.”
In other words, Luthor’s plan may not make a lot of sense now, but wait until you see his long game! Then everything will come together! Maybe? Possibly? Of course, you could just say “Luthor does what he does because he’s psychotic and evil,” and leave it at that. In world of comic books, that’s considered perfectly acceptable character motivation.
