As somebody who blogs about video games for a living, I’ve seen a lot of fan films dedicated to popular video games. Most of them aren’t that great. Even the “good” ones usually feel a bit off.
Well, that can’t be said about Metroid: The Sky Calls. Nintendo doesn’t seem to be particularly interested in continuing the story of Samus Aran, so the folks at Rainfall Films went and did it for them. The short stars Jessica Chobot of IGN and The Nerdist fame, and focuses on Samus as she follows a Chozo signal to a mysterious “abandoned” planet. As you might expect, things don’t exactly go well once she gets there.
Aside from hitting the exact right tone, Metroid: The Sky Calls just looks fantastic, drawing imagery and influence from classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien. Back in the early 2000s, there was reportedly a Metroid movie in development. The movie fell through, but this short is clear evidence a Metroid movie could and should work. If a small group of fans working with a YouTube-level budget can make something that looks this good, imagine what Hollywood and its endless millions could do with Metroid?
And now we go back to waiting for a Metroid game that people actually want to play.
