Back in early 2015, Fox announced they’d be bringing the young, hip New Mutants to the screen with Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) as director. Since then, details on the project have been scarce. Like, for instance, which characters are going to be featured in the film? The New Mutants‘ heyday came in the early ’80s, but they had another spike in popularity in the late ’80s when the infamous Rob Liefeld took over on art. Dozens of characters have been a part of the team over the years.
Well, Josh Boone may have revealed his team via a series of revealing Instagram posts, and it seems the New Mutants movie will be taking its inspiration from the classic early ’80s comics.
First up we have Magik, a powerful sorceress and sister to the X-Men’s Colossus. According to recent rumors, Magik will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, star of the horror sleeper hit The Witch.
Wolfsbane is a Scottish mutant who can turn into a werewolf-like creature. Rumor is she’ll be played by Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams.
Mirage is a Native American mutant from the Cheyenne tribe, who can project detailed 3D illusions. From here on out, we don’t have any information on who might be playing any of these characters.
Cannonball, the nominal leader of the team. True to his name, he can hurl himself at enemies like a cannonball.
Sunspot, a Brazilian mutant who has super strength, which he can only use if he’s stored up enough solar energy. The solar calculator of superheroes!
And finally Warlock, a member of a Borg-like technological race that infects living creatures and drains them of their energy. Developing a degree of compassion, Warlock breaks away from his people to live on Earth.
So there’s your New Mutants team. Seems like a fun, fairly diverse group to me. Hopefully Fox finds actual Native American and Latino actors to play Mirage and Sunspot, and after recent whitewashing brewhahas, I have a feeling they’ll do the right thing. What do you think of the lineup? Ready for some mutant teen spirit?
