Get a couple of Emmy-worthy actors in a one-on-one conversation and watch the sparks start flying all over everywhere. Such was the case when Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch and Blunt Talk’s Patrick Stewart faced off as part of Variety’s fourth “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” project.

Middleditch’s task was to engage Stewart in a round of everyone’s favorite game, “F**K, Marry, Kill.” The catch was that the contestants were characters who served under Stewart’s iconic Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Given the options of Will Riker, Counselor Deanna Troi or the android Data, Stewart, after responding to Middleditch’s question by saying, “Lord, this is a complicated question,” and confessing he was unfamiliar with the game, pensively allowed that he’d have to do away with Riker “because he’s big and scary and very dominating.” His choice of a wife was Counselor Troi. That left Data as his final choice, which he said was an easy one “because, well think about it.”

Stewart then relayed how actor Brent Spiner, who played Data, would describe his character as “fully functional, in fact he has three speeds.” Stewart then demonstrated what those three speeds were using sound effects, much to the delight of Middleditch. But seriously, three speeds? Who could argue with that?
