It’s been in the works since 2010, but now it’s official: Ernie Cline’s cult novel Ready Player One is coming to theaters in 2017, courtesy of Steven Spielberg.

Admittedly, it’s pretty close to 2018, with this one: The official date is Dec. 15, 2017. Ready Player One follows Wade Watts, a poor kid whose sole escape is into a virtual reality called OASIS, designed by a nerd. It turns out there are a series of puzzles themed around ’70s and ’80s nerd culture hidden in the OASIS, and whoever cracks the puzzles wins ownership of the whole shebang. Wade is in a race with, what else, an evil corporation who wants to take the OASIS away from everybody to make money.

See, this is generally why we don’t let eccentric nerds own crucial infrastructure. Anyway, if anybody can do this book justice, it’s Spielberg; after all, he defined a lot of ’70s and ’80s nerd culture with his movies. Mostly, it’s a question of whether modern audiences will care about the Tomb of Horrors, but at least we get Steven Spielberg recreating the Tomb of Horrors!
