One of the big questions around Suicide Squad is just what the Joker has to do with it all. Is he the main bad guy? Is he part of the team? Or is he just part of Harley’s backstory? His trailer fills in quite a few of those blanks, if you’re paying attention.
First off, if you keep an ear out, you’ll hear the Joker be informed that Harley and the rest of the Squad has been taken out of Belle Reve for their mission, which implies he shows up to rescue her or, at least, suck her back into his abusive orbit, which is part for the course for their relationship. Another intriguing tidbit is that he and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg seem to have something of a history: At one point, we see what appears to be a set of shots with the Joker in a straightjacket grinning at a frustrated Rick.
Also, blink and you’ll miss it, but it looks like Captain Boomerang makes the grave, grave mistake of picking a fight with Katana. He does appear to survive it, at least, but we won’t be surprised if that’s the first of many ass-kickings Boomerang takes in the movie. We’ll find out August 5.
