Charles Barkley Claimed He Got A Contact High From Hosting ‘SNL’ With Nirvana

Charles Barkley says he doesn’t smoke pot much, but there was a time that Nirvana didn’t give him much of a choice.

Barkley discussed his marijuana use Friday on Dan Patrick’s radio show, telling a funny story about hosting Saturday Night Live with musical guest Nirvana. LaVar Ball’s arch enemy said he got a “contact high” from Nirvana’s dressing room when he hosed the show in 1993.

“As far as you can open your arms, that’s how far the dressing rooms are,” he said. “I had people coming in and out, my friends, so I kept my dressing room open.”

Nirvana’s dressing room door wasn’t open, however, and they were clearly smoking a ton of weed while getting ready for the show.

“Every time those guys from Nirvana opened their door I got like a contact high,” Barkley said. “It was like one of those big mushroom clouds came.”

Barkley said he was afraid to go to the airport, presumably because he didn’t want to get arrested on drug charges. But the Round Mound of Rebound said he doesn’t like weed much.

“I’m not a big pot guy. I’ve only smoked it three times … five times in my life. And all it did was make me want to eat potato chips.

“I smoked in the pros. I had a couple teammates who were like ‘dude, try this.’ I’m like, ‘alright let me try it.’

“And it didn’t give me no peace. I didn’t like… all I wanted was potato chips.”

Barkley said pot only gave him “the munches,” and he was bewildered by other NBA players smoking cigarettes or drinking beer at halftime of games.

“I was like, ‘goodness gracious,'” he said. “But things have changed.”

He also told a hilarious story about his college coach asking his players to stage an “intervention” on a teammate who loved to smoke weed. The shooter agreed and went cold, and Barkley and the Tigers went back to the coach and told him he needed to smoke to shoot.

“This guy could not make a shot off of pot,” Barkley said. “It was hilarious.”

Barkley’s interview with Patrick is full of interesting quotes, like the revelation that he’d kill Skip Bayless live on TV if the situation were right. You may not like his constant scuffles or his opinions, he’s still a hell of a storyteller.
