Guillermo Del Toro Has Some ‘Star Wars’ Ideas

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim) is currently at work on several projects — The Shape Of Water, Netflix’s Trollhunters, writing and producing Pacific Rim: Uprising, and telling Konami to eff themselves. In speaking with Collider about his current work, he joked about his many projects and the rumors surrounding him (“Every time I say ‘good morning’ somebody says ‘Guillermo is doing Good Morning!’ “) and he mentioned Star Wars, so allow us to say “Guillermo is doing Star Wars: Good Morning!” Er, perhaps not. But he has discussed ideas with Disney.

“I will say there are some characters that are great, and I have talked to [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy and [Industrial Light and Magic CCO] John Knoll about ideas.”

This isn’t the first time Del Toro has flirted with the possibility of working on a Star Wars film. Back in 2013, he admitted his agent called him to gauge his interest in directing the nascent Episode VII but he had to turn down the meeting because he had too many projects. Then, in 2015, he explained what his dream Star Wars movie would be: a Jabba The Hutt origin story. He told Yahoo!:

“I would do the sort of Godfather saga the Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup, you know? I just love the character.”

So why has he come so close to Making Jabba Great Again and never gone through with it? Because he’d like to do his own projects, at his own (agonizingly slow) pace. He told Collider:

“You know, I want to do my sh*t. I want to do my sh*t. I want to do it first. I’m veering a lot towards animation. I love animation. The pace is better. You have three years to f*ck up, so you f*ck up a lot less.”

No wonder Pixar movies are so good.

Anyway, you can watch the whole, extensive interview over at Collider.
